I am writing on behalf of my daughter..

She was on council tax benefits but had to pay 15 pounds a month as she was told to do..as she recieved maternity benefits, she was up to date with her payments..

she moved, she told them that she was moving.. paid her last instalment of 15 pounds.

last week, over 4 months later she gets a court summons for an outstanding amount plus costs of 120 pounds and telling her that she had to pay this plus the court costs of a further 50 pounds.

she called the council and they told her that she had been over paid benefits because she moved out before the end of the tax year had ended...

how can this be.. she is now on full benefits

the council explained that they work out the benefit for a full year, but because she moved out she now has to pay extra..

can any one explain this to me as It dosnt seem right to me.. not to mention that they say they sent her two final bills but she has never recieved them.. she cant afford for this to go to court is there any one that can help her as the council just wont listen to her or explain what they have done.

Did your daughter change borough?

Surely if she notified them, it is up to them to send her a final bill and calculate any differences?

I pay business rates and on change of business notified council and they amended my old account (I got a refund as business "closed" before full years term) and they set up a new account for the new name and I received a fresh bill.

I can't see why home council tax would work any different.

I am sure if it goes to court and your daughter explains all (hopefully with proof she notified them) it will go in her favour.

Something certainly sounds wrong here. Good luck with it!
